An official ceremony today marked the transfer of the YF-22, the prototype for the F-22 Raptor, to the U. S. Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio. This is the first time a prototype of a new advanced aircraft type has been displayed in the Air Force Museum at thes ame time the refined design that was derived from it (the F-22) is in testing.
31-03-1998 - Wright Patterson Airforce Base, OH -- The YF-22 was chosen by the Air Force in 1991 over a competing YF-23 design from a team led by Northrop. Its selection gave the team led by Lockheed Martin, Boeing, and Pratt & Whitney a mandate to develop theF-22, the world's first fifth-generation air dominance fighter, to replace the Air Force's current fleet of F-15 aircraft.
